Baroque Art
This course examines the social, cultural and political contexts which allowed Baroque art to emerge and flourish. The Reformation and Counter-Reformation and how they influenced Baroque art in Protestant and Catholic countries will be highlighted in this course. Participants will discuss the emergence of the art market as artists became entrepreneurs with their products in great demand as capitalism developed, aided by the patronage of civic groups. Genres such as landscape, still life and genre scenes popularised in the Baroque, architecture and sculpture will be discussed.
Some of the greatest artists who ever lived, such as Bernini, Caravaggio, Hals, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, and Velasquez and their most important works will also be analysed.
