New! Creative Writing: Humour

In this course on writing humour, you will explore the relationship between writer and reader through readings and discussion with writer and editor Michelle Elvy.

The focus will be on the what, why and how of humour – including how character, setting, mood, place and space create both set-up and delivery of humour on the page. You will examine the relationship between writer and reader, and explore subtleties of the form across cultures, with examples from readings as well as students’ own writing from each week.

Participants will strengthen their writing by focusing on the intricacies of writing humour. You will learn how to establish the base, creating character and place. You will look at how to develop a slow build or a punchy line. You will also learn how to create a believable voice and controlled pace – both essential elements of humour.

Each week includes a writing assignment and sharing session.
