Tell us a little about yourself – which country do you originate and how did you come to pursue the arts?
I come from France and I have always wanted to be a film editor. I have had the chance to further my studies in France and Canada, ranging from arts, literature, ethnology to film studies. My dream came true when I received my Masters in Film Editing at La Fémis – a French film school which was ranked as one of the top 10 international film schools.
Upon graduation, I edited documentaries and art films, and specialised in sound design for feature films. I have worked with world renowned film directors and filmmakers such as Chantal Akerman, Marcel Ophuls, Keren Yedaya and Pavel Lounguine. My work has also brought me around the world to places such as Brazil, Russia and Israel.
What made you decide to be an arts educator; and why Singapore?
It's a joy to share my knowledge. I used to conduct workshops in France and abroad, to both students and adults, either in the technical or artistic aspect of the arts.
To me, film editing is not exactly a knowledge. It's more of an experience. You have to stay humble and listen to the film, to find its own language, narrative and rhythm. It's more of an organic process, rather than theoretical. You have to be able to break the rules you have learned, so it's a challenge to teach this art/technique of editing.
I don't really know how I landed in Singapore, but I am so glad I did! I immediately fell in love with Singapore!
Briefly describe your experience at LASALLE and share with us a memorable/rewarding experience in your time at LASALLE.
My most rewarding experience at LASALLE has to be when the students expressed their understanding and appreciation towards my teaching, in terms of how they can improve on their skills. I love to be in LASALLE, among the different talented colleagues, where I am passionate and proud to be contributing to Singapore’s growing arts scene.
What are you passionate about besides your work, what keeps you curious?
Besides teaching, I make films ranging from documentaries, diaries, experimentals, fictions, etc. I also design electroacoustic music for installations, exhibitions and live shows. I have had a few photo exhibitions during these past few years in Paris and Arles in France, Osaka and Tokyo. I love travelling and collecting videos, photos and sounds from around the world.
Almost everything keeps me curious, maybe with the exception of ball sports.
What's coming up next in your professional practice/research?
I try to have a fulfilling and adventurous life, rich in encounters and new learnings. If time permits, I would like to pursue a PhD in Asian Cinema about silent films.
