Tell us a little about yourself – which country do you come from and how did you come into the teaching profession?

I grew up in Mexico City, surrounded by amazing art and a very rich culture. My father was an editor and my mum was a fashion journalist. I was exposed to museums since I was very little and my mum owned a wonderful art collection, which was displayed at our house. While she could not afford very expensive pieces of art she still managed to acquire works by great Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera, Francisco Toledo, and Rufino Tamayo. I was always fascinated by these objects – their colours, textures, and stories – so I guess this was what brought me to fashion. I studied Fashion Curation in England and it was then that I felt I wanted to remain in the research and education field.

What made you decide to come to Singapore and why LASALLE?

I came to Singapore with my husband Dave, we both used to work at the British Council, so we came to Singapore together. I was desperately looking for a series of fashion books to finalise my research to complete my MA studies in Fashion Curation. It was then that I contacted LASALLE. LASALLE’s fashion team helped me get access to all these titles through its magnificent Ngee Ann Kongsi Library; thanks to their help, I managed to complete my MA research study. I had never imagined this was going to be the beginning of a fantastic journey at LASALLE. I started teaching History of Fashion and today I am managing the BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries Programme.

You have been with LASALLE for more than 5 years, how has your experience been so far, living in Singapore and working in LASALLE?

Fantastic! I have met the most interesting Singaporean creatives through LASALLE. We have a wonderful and very diverse team in the college with people coming form both Singapore and different parts of the world. The team has very different artistic backgrounds and this gives us the opportunity to provide our students with a wonderful educational experience. The country has the most delicious food and I love the weather and its visionary idea of a garden city.

What is one quality in you that you find most 'Singaporean'?

Singlish? I love it!
