LASALLE’s School of Contemporary Music students took part in SCOREWARS x Hans Zimmer vs John Williams – a contest organised by BASE Entertainment Asia, in conjunction with the concert, The Music of Hans Zimmer vs John Williams. The students had the opportunity to showcase their original compositions based on either Hans Zimmer or John Williams’ well-known scores.

We spoke with the three winners, based on number of LIKEs on LASALLE’s Facebook contest – Elsa Mickayla, Jon Tho and Tabitha Boon – and they share with us about their work:

My favourite composer is… And why?
Elsa: John Williams, because he uses a certain strong theme for his music. It is catchy and it’s also productive for his composition.
Jon: John Williams, because of his beautiful melodic lines and emotional contours.
Tabitha: Hans Zimmer because he’s a really good businessman and has an interesting way of composing soundscapes, creating a lot of intense emotions.

Your inspiration?
Elsa: I was inspired by Harry Potter’s soundtrack which was written by John Williams and it happens that the Harry Potter films are among my favourite movies. It brought back a lot of old memories!
Jon: I was inspired by John Williams’ Seven Years in Tibet and E.T.’s Over The Moon because of his use of unrelated triads and modal interchange.

Tabitha: My inspiration for the song that I composed was largely based on Hans Zimmer’s The Dark Knight score. The “Joker” theme is very iconic as the score is largely pending on one note, but he creates a very dense atmosphere with it. That was something that I liked and brought into my writing. I thought of a scene where monsters were coming up from the city and destroying the urban landscape.

Take a listen to the original compositions inspired by Hans Zimmer and John Williams!
