For those who had witnessed Tremble Tremble by Irish artist Jesse Jones during the 57th Venice Biennale this year, many left filled with awe.

The same atmosphere at the Pavilion of Ireland was recreated by Jesse at LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore(ICAS), and as an arts correspondent for Lianhe Zaobao noted, “it is as if one is right in the centre of a movie.”

With video projections of a woman portraying the witch archetype, murmured words that sounded like a spell, a large fabric enfolding visitors (sometimes menacingly, sometimes soothingly), and haunted movements from a group of student dancers, Tremble Tremble in Singapore saw the ICAS’s gallery converted into a highly elemental space to discuss feminism, power, and legacy.

By injecting her own personal experiences of Singapore into this exhibition, following her artist residency at LASALLE, Jesse expanded on her research into how the past, present and future are all connected by a thread of action.

When Tremble Tremble’s showcase wraps up in Singapore on 28 January 2018, it will then travel to Ireland for an exhibition tour.
